Denmark
The pretty town of Denmark is located 54km west of Albany and is nestled on a picturesque riverbank. The river being central to town and the fabulous surrounding green grassy picnic area makes a great place to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the small town. Denmark River joins up with the impressive Wilson Inlet, the ideal waterway for boating and water sports. Boats can be launched in town at the Rivermouth and at Poddyshot Landing.
This gorgeous township boasts plenty of wineries located within 30km and the journey through the Karri forests is delightful. Pick up a map from the Visitors Centre and select a few to visit whilst driving in the countryside or simply call in to those that catch your eye.
Mt Shadforth Tourist Drive beginning from the town centre is a very enjoyable drive through Karri forests, farmland and the wine region. The Mt Shadforth Lookout, off Mohr Drive, provides views of the Southern Ocean, Wilson Inlet and rolling hills. Continue along the Mt Shadforth loop (note part of this tourist drive is on unsealed road) and return to town via McLeod Rd and South Coast Highway or alternatively head west along South Coast Highway to explore William Bay National Park, which can easily be done in a day.
Ocean Beach is a popular swimming and body boarding beach with lifeguards stationed there during the summer holidays and weekends through until April. The lookout over the beach and inlet provides some stunning views with the town site in the background. Keep an eye out for Southern Right and Humpback Whales between July and November.
Fresh produce is plentiful in this region and the locals get together on alternate Sundays at the Scouts Hall on Brazier Street to sell seafood, meats, fruit, vegetables, dairy and other homemade foods and gifts. You’ll always find a bargain at the Community Markets.
Only 15km southwest of town is William Bay National Park. Its 10km span of coastline is easily explored in a day and makes a pleasant day trip particularly during the warmer months. Points of interest include Greens Pool, Elephant Rocks, Madfish Bay and Waterfall Beach, all boasting magnificent scenery. These are accessible via unsealed roads and the walks are short and easy.
There is much to do in the Denmark area. Whether you’re relaxing on the river, body surfing in the Southern Ocean or sight-seeing in one of the nearby national parks, the picturesque riverside town definitely has appeal.
