Echuca is located 210km northwest of Melbourne on the banks of the Murray River. The historical township once operated the largest inland port in Australia, utilizing the legendary Murray and its tributaries as a transport system to trade local industry products with other states. The trade eventually declined and the port was closed but this is what attracts people here today, the river and the restored port.

The Murray River Paddlesteamers are the main attraction. There are several boats and tours to choose from. Cruise on the PS Pevensey who starred in “All The Rivers Run” TV mini series, P.S. Canberra, Pride of The Murray, M.V. Mary Anne the cruising restaurant, or cruise in style on the Emmylou and stay overnight onboard wining and dining yourselves. Cruise tickets are available from the boat or from the Coach-House in the historic Port Esplanade.

echuca-houseboats Murray River Houseboats are also available for self guided tours on the Murray River. These impressive homes on the water feature everything you could possibly need on board and some with spas. Imagine cruising along the Murray at your own pace, relaxing, fishing or just taking it all in. A boating licence is not required and a minimum 3 day hire is applicable.

The Port is a step back in time. Blacksmiths, Woodturners, Rustic Red Gum Furniture, Winery with handcrafted barrels and old hotels line the Esplanade. Watch the Paddlesteamers chug past or learn more about the town's story at the Cargo Shed Museum.

The Murray River and history aside, another great attraction is The Great Aussie Beer Shed on Mary Ann Rd. Owner Neil Thomas is a jovial Aussie bloke providing plenty of jokes and stories along the tour and you also learn a bit about his collection. Neil’s beer shed is packed to the rafters with over 16,000 beer cans from Australia and worldwide, it is very impressive. Neil also has a Coca Cola and Guinness Stout collection as well as all sorts of ancient equipment he will test your knowledge with. The shed is open 9.30am-5pm on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. And yes you get a beer and stubby holder to enjoy on the tour and are welcome to stay longer for another drink or a chat. Beer drinkers will love it.

Echuca is a gorgeous town with much history revolving around the Murray River and its Port, turning heads back in the days of its major success. The history and the river and paddlesteamers make Echuca a delightful place to come and explore.
