Hahndorf is located 30km southeast of Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills. Established in 1839, this is Australia’s oldest German community. This absolutely charming village with European style buildings, many of original architecture and condition, is still very much German oriented after all these years. The town’s German heritage and style is its tourism draw-card and no visit to Adelaide is complete without making the short and worthy journey here.

The quaint tree-lined main street boasts all sorts of cafes and restaurants, many serving delicious German foods. Kransky, Bockwurst, Bratwurst and Vienna sausages with assorted mustards are readily available and you just can’t go past a delicious hotdog and a good old stein of beer in one of the pubs, 300ml, 500ml or 1 litre. Take your pick!

The people are friendly and welcoming here, the service is second to none and the German vibe is like another world away. The Hahndorf experience takes you away to another country whilst remaining right here in Australia.

It is such a pleasant day trip from Adelaide, getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city, spending the day wandering the main street lined with gift and souvenir shops, taste temptations and plenty of amber ale on tap. Sitting out the front of one of the hotels enjoying the view and the atmosphere, as well as a stein and a fabulous meal as you watch the world go by is a pretty good way to spend the day.

Or stay a little longer and seek accommodation at one of the many hotels, inns, lodges, holiday homes or apartments on offer. There is no caravan park here so treating yourselves to an evening at a hotel could be just what you need, or an excuse to enjoy a night of luxury out of the camp ground if you’re travelling that way. Regardless, whether you decide to day trip it from Adelaide or stay here in town, you’ll definitely be glad you came. It is a beautiful town with much appeal, authenticity and originality.
