Hamelin Bay
Hamelin Bay is located 30km south of
Margaret River in the
Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park, which borders the coastline from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin in the south west. This fishing and diving haven is a water playground with a beachside caravan park and boat ramp for the boating enthusiasts.
The bay’s rocky reefs provide protection and hiding places for an array of marine life. Caverns, ledges and an abundance of sea kelp shelter fish from predators. The winter seas push much of the kelp to shore however this is cleaned up for the warmer months and tourism season. It also reproduces around the reefs and the marine hideouts.
Scuba divers and snorkellers will enjoy exploring the reefs. Mushroom Rock, Hamelin Island and Northeast Bombie are all offshore fish havens accessible by boat and range from 6-9 metres deep. Mushroom Rock is a 300m swim from shore. Sharks, stingrays, cuttlefish and large bottom-dwelling fish such as Groper and Harlequin are commonly seen.
Fishermen can try their luck for Harlequin, Western Blue Groper, Bream, Sweep, Herring, Boxfish, Zebra Fish and Port Jackson Sharks.
Crayfishermen will also be in their element at the right time of year as we’ve seen some impressive specimens caught in these waters. Jumbo crayfish could certainly be on the menu here as well as abalone
.
The holiday park here is across from the beach and offers self-contained cabin and cottage accommodation to suit all budgets and plenty of powered and unpowered sites for the campers and caravanners. Note that bore water is only available here so bring plenty of drinking water along. Alternatively the on-site store sells bottled water, grocery items, ice, bait, fishing tackle and gas refills. Due to national park restrictions pets are not permitted here.
Hamelin Bay is a peaceful and scenic location revolving around water activities. It’s a great place to base yourselves to enjoy the local beaches and explore the Margaret River Wine Region.
