Kingston SE is located 296km southeast of Adelaide on Lacepede Bay. The crayfish capital of South Australia boasts a historic fishing industry in Lacepede Bay dating back to the 1890’s and still continues today. The reef off Cape Jaffa is the perfect breeding ground for Crayfish, or Rock Lobster.
Kingston’s iconic “Big Lobster” standing 17m tall is a photo opportunity not to be missed. The enormous specimen was apparently ordered in “feet” but came in “metres” so is a bit larger than bargained for, all the more impressive. The Big Lobster stands tall on Marine Parade outside The Big Lobster licensed café serving fresh lobster, gourmet foods and refreshments. Souvenirs are also available here.
Another of the area’s icons is the historic Cape Jaffa Lighthouse
. Still overlooking Lacepede Bay but from a different position, the lighthouse once stood on Margaret Brock Reef some 15km southwest of here. After over 100 years out at sea the lighthouse was relocated to Kingston and is now open to the public for viewing for a small entry fee.
Lacepede Bay is a stunning stretch of beach with crisp white sand and aqua green water, beautiful for swimming, fishing, boating and four-wheel driving. Summer days are spectacular in this region of glorious coastline.
The Kingston Jetty today is the remains of the 1.2km jetty partly destroyed by a storm in the 1950’s. The repaired jetty is used by local commercial fishermen and for recreational fishing. Overnight (24 hour) camping is permitted by the jetty for travellers in self contained rigs such as motorhomes and caravans.
The Kingston Caravan Park is located on the foreshore along Marine Parade. Alternatively there is a free bush camp without facilities at The Granites, which is 18km north of town. The beach is just beautiful, sporting three large granite boulders looking somewhat out of place on the otherwise pristine sands.
