National Anthem

The Australian national anthem, "Advance Australia Fair" represents the patriotism, compassion and values of the Australian people. We Australians love our country, our land, our people and what we stand for and we are willing and able to share it with others. We welcome visitors from far and wide to explore our boundless plains and enjoy the freedom in our magnificent country.

Advance Australia Fair

Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free,
We've golden soil and wealth for toil
Our home is girt by sea,
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

The Australian national anthem expresses the pride in being Australian and the fortune to live in this country. We are truly blessed and as our Australian Government suggests, this honourable song is also about “Australia celebrating Australians.” Advance Australia Fair was composed in the 1870’s by Scotsman, Peter Dodds McCormick and sung with gusto and patriotism for years, but only became recognised as our nation’s official song of choice in 1984. Competition included “God Save the Queen” (the Royal anthem), “Song of Australia,” (by Caroline Carleton and Carl Linger) and "Waltzing Matilda", the beloved Aussie ballad written by well-know poet Banjo Patterson. Our passionate anthem is treasured by Australians and well used at official and ceremonial occasions throughout the country and overseas. This song is deeply cherished by all Australians and unites us in times of both happiness and sadness.
