Pardoo is a working station located on the coast 120km northeast of Port Hedland and is accessible via 13km gravel road off the Great Northern Highway. The station offers air-conditioned motel style accommodation as well as powered camp sites on a grassy area, a swimming pool, laundry facilities and a licensed restaurant. Many supplies are available here including groceries, liquor, fishing tackle, bait, ice, gas bottle refills and fuel. Dogs are permitted providing they are kept on a lead.
There is plenty of coastline to fish from around high tide. We managed to time our visit during low tide and the mud flats stretched for miles with shells galore. Sea urchins with extraordinary patterns, carved like in appearance, were scattered along the high tide line. The beach isn’t suitable for swimming here.
Fishing is the predominant activity here. You can either fish the coast or Pardoo Creek, chasing Bluenose and Threadfin Salmon. Note that the area is very tidal so be sure to request a tide chart from the friendly station staff upon arrival. Mud maps covering the many four-wheel drive tracks on the station are also available from reception.
If you are visiting and fishing on the station you are asked to adhere to local fishing regulations. Bluenose Salmon minimum size is 40cm and the bag limit is 4 per vehicle. Mud crab minimum size is 150mm and the bag limit is 4 per vehicle.
Cape Keraudren is just a 14km drive from the roadhouse. This is a popular spot to explore whilst staying at the station and offers fishing, swimming and snorkelling as well as scenery. It makes a great day trip.
If you’re after a quiet fishing spot or a convenient stop over between Port Hedland and Broome then this could be just the place you’re looking for.
