Seventeen Seventy
Seventeen Seventy, or the Town of 1770 as often referred to, is located about 125km southeast of Gladstone and is the twin seaside town to Agnes Water. The town was aptly named after Captain James Cook who anchored his “Endeavour” 3km off the coastline and came ashore at Round Hill Head here in May 1770.
The town foreshore is simply beautiful, with crystal clear and calm waters and a long stretch of beach to find your own place to settle. It’s all about unwinding as you overlook Bustard Bay, swim, sunbake, take a stroll or just relax and watch the world go by.
Monument Point is at the northern end of the foreshore and a plaque and history board marks the anchoring of the Endeavour just off the Queensland coast in the year 1770. The point offers picturesque views of the bay named after a Bustard bird that Cook and his crew fed on, one of their best meals since leaving England.
The
Marina has an excellent boat launching facility, small swim beach and sparkling blue water. Boat cruises to the Great Barrier Reef and Lady Musgrave Island depart from here. Bookings can be made at the marina office or by contacting tour companies direct.
Joseph Banks Conservation Park at the southern end of town offers some beautiful coastal views from the headland. A short uphill walk leads to lookout points over Round Hill Head and beyond.
The township has two caravan parks, the 1770 Camping Grounds and Captain Cook Holiday Village. Both are close to the beach and very popular in summer months and school holidays, so it is advisable to book ahead.
Seventeen Seventy doesn’t have a shopping centre, however next door at
Agnes Water township there are shopping facilities including supermarkets and all the basic requirements such as bakery, butcher, newsagent, post office, fuel, cafes, restaurants and pub. It’s all within reach.
