Tailem Bend is located 99km southeast of Adelaide on the Murray River, Australia’s longest river which stretches over 2500km along the New South Wales-Victorian border and through South Australia, where it meets the Coorong lake system and finally the Southern Ocean. This township is situated along the cliff-tops overlooking a prominent bend of the mighty river.
Three highways meet here so there’s potentially plenty of traffic, namely tourists. With a caravan park beside the river it makes a picturesque and easy stopover for the weary traveller. The Rivers Edge Caravan Park
offers riverside camping, powered and unpowered sites (where you choose your own spot), on-site vans, cabins and villas. Pets are permitted in the camping area.
Travelling fishermen might like to seize the opportunity and try and catch a Murray Cod
or perhaps a Coorong Mullet
and what a relaxing and picturesque setting to do it in. The Murray Cod is known to grow to up to 1.8m in length so some heavy gear is required to pull in one of the trophy sized fish and the country’s largest freshwater fish! There are also plenty of other species to target including Redfin, Callop, Perch, Bream and Trout, to name a few.
Rich in railway history dating back to the construction of the Melbourne to Adelaide line in the 1880’s, the Rail Museum is another place of interest, located in the town’s Visitor Centre which is the old railway station building dating back to 1913 and is open daily. The museum displays old railway memorabilia.
Another historic attraction is Old Tailem Town, a village replicating pioneer life in South Australia. The enormous village with over 100 buildings is a step back in time. The pioneer town is open daily between 10am and 5pm and entry fees apply.
The magnificent Murray River
sees plenty of activity…houseboats, cruises, boating, canoeing, kayaking, water-skiing, bird watching and of course fishing. Do any of these take your fancy? Tailem Bend is a quiet and friendly town on route to and from the Adelaide Freeway in which to stop over and enjoy the tranquility of the majestic Murray River.
