Warburton is located 75km east of Melbourne outside the southern boundary of the Yarra Ranges National Park. This charming little town is characterised by old rustic buildings lining the main street and is surrounded by mountain ranges.
The landscaped gardens
in the town centre are a shrine to the fallen comrades from WW11, Korean and Vietnam Wars. Beautiful bright red roses and manicured lawns border the paved steps leading to the memorial.
The quaint township offers a variety of gourmet foods, takeaways, café and pub meals. Warburton is the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat or just to stroll through the gardens or along the Yarra River, breaking up your travels or opting to stay at the local caravan park and wind down in a peaceful town.
Behind the local shops is the Yarra River, set amongst lush greenery. The “River Walk” follows alongside the Yarra for 3km, passing several river crossings including the swinging bridge. Explore the walking trail in its entirety or enjoy a casual riverside stroll, feed the local ducks or if weather permits frolic in the Yarra River. There are also several other walking trails in the surrounding area for tourists to enjoy.
Just 20km from town is Mt Donna Buang in the western section of the Yarra Ranges National Park. There are plenty of walking trails here as well as barbeque facilities and a lookout tower at the summit. The mountain peaks at over 1.2km high and is the closest snow field to Melbourne. South east of Mt Donna Buang is Cement Creek where you’ll find a short rainforest gallery walk along the forest floor and a skywalk through the rainforest canopy.
In the eastern section of Yarra Ranges National Park you can further explore the mighty Yarra River and the Upper Yarra Reservoir which supplies water to Melbourne and surrounds. There are lookouts over the dam, spillway and catchment areas and a spacious, manicured camp ground in a beautiful bush setting just 1km away. This area is tranquil and relaxing, making it a great escape in the outdoors amongst nature.
