Yallingup

Yallingup is located 45km northwest of Margaret River in WA’s south west. The seaside township is known for its excellent surf breaks, World Champion surfers and its close vicinity to all of the attractions that the Margaret River Wine Region has to offer.

The surfie township multiplies in population during the warmer months, particularly during weekends and school holidays. The beaches are littered with bodies soaking up the sun and the surf. Summer is superb here and the fishing isn’t too bad either. Whether off the beach or offshore you’re bound to catch something here.

Yallingup Beach is a popular surf and swim beach and is the main beach on the foreshore where most of the action takes place. Other beaches with surf breaks close by are Smiths Beach and Super Tubes south of town and Rabbit Hill to the north and there are plenty more breaks along the coast towards the world famous Margaret River.

There are also plenty of other attractions besides the fabulous surf in the area. Along the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge which runs from Cape to Cape are an extraordinary amount of caves belonging to the Karst system, which results from rapid water drainage. These beautiful caves beneath the Karri forest are all accessible along Caves Road between Yallingup and Augusta. The local tourism association operates guided tours at the Lake Cave and Jewel Cave hourly between 9.30am and 3.30pm and self-guided tours at the Mammoth Cave between 9am and 5pm. Discount Grand Tour Passes are available if you’d like to visit all 3 caves and the Ultimate Pass includes the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse as well. Both passes are valid for 7 days so there’s plenty of time to explore them all.

The Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is on Leeuwin Road near Augusta. The historical tower stands at Western Australia’s most southwesterly point offering views out to sea, where the Indian and South Oceans meet. Lighthouse tours are run regularly each day between 9am and 4.20pm and cost $17 per adult and $7 per child. Please note site access fees also apply which are $5 per adult and $3 per child. There is a visitor centre, café and souvenir shop on site and those participating in the lighthouse tour are required to arrive 15 minutes early to walk to the lighthouse.

There are wineries galore, several breweries, restaurants, cafes, confectionery outlets and gourmet produce. The scenery is delightful here and the waves are pumping just 10km from town at Prevally.

This region is remarkable. From Cape Naturaliste in the north to Cape Leeuwin in the south, it’s all worth exploring and enjoying. Yallingup is a beautiful place to base yourselves by the beach in one of two caravan parks or one of many holiday homes and discover what the region has to offer.
